Cats and Iceland

I feel so out of the olfactory loop that everyone seems to be in now. First everybody had spring but we had winter. Then everybody had summer, we had the coldest June in 20 years and the most rainy one for 100 years! Now everyone is having heat waves and what did I do? I went to Iceland. No heat waves there.

But I did have a great few days. I managed to meet up with my relatives, spend lots of time with my kids, youngest sister and mom and catch up with the local gossip of Reykjavik. I also managed to get some cat pictures for you. My mom has 4 georgeous cats. 3 are Maine Coons and one is a local blend.

I also managed to try 2 Icelandic perfumes at the airport, Ella Day and Ella Night. Ella Day started with a harsh lemon note that wasn't my thing at all but Ella Night was actually quite lovely, smelling of fur and vanilla, making me miss the cats even more. It lasted the whole trip on my wrist, the fur fading and the vanilla getting thinner and thinner and more like vanillin sugar as the hours went by. Not terribly complicated, but I'm not complaining, I seldom like vanillas so I'm happy I came across this one.

  1. I love the idea of fur & vanilla. Only in Iceland?

    1. I haven't seen it outside Iceland but according to their website they do ship internationally. You can check them out at http://www.ellabyel.com/product/ELLA%20NIGHT/

And, of course, it never hurts writing a polite letter asking for samples...

  2. Sigrun, I am so there with you on feeling out of the olfactory loop, it's almost uncanny. 1) Still experiencing winter when everyone else is talking about their spring fragrances 2) cool and rainy spring, by June 11th we'd already had as much rain as the typical monthly average 3) not experiencing the sweltering temps every else is - where I live, we just hit 32C/90F, and that is rare for us.

Just checked on Wiki, and while your latitude (59) is farther north than mine (51), your weather is milder. I suspect it's partly because you live by water, while I'm at a high altitude far, far away from any major body of water.

We could form a "Perfumistas of the North" club, what do you think? :)

    1. Yes, we should most definately form a "Perfumistas of the North" club. The seasons that we're experiencing just aren't what, say, an Italian is having:)

Living close to water accounts for a lot when it comes to climate. Here we do have pronounced seasons, and I bet you have even more of that, but in Iceland the temperature is very random throughout the year and the change of seasons is more about the change of daylight than the change of temperature. Weirdly enough, wearing perfume there felt a little bit out of place as the air was so clean and full of oxygen from the sea, and I didn't have the "background noise" of smells that I'm used to from here :)

  3. Even though you had already clued me in to the miserable state of weather you're having via our emails (and even though I really do feel for you), I got such a chuckle reading your opening paragraph! ("Now everyone is having heat waves and what did I do? I went to Iceland.") :D

Well, at least you did receive lots of other pleasures in Iceland. Love those kitty pictures and hearing about your fur and vanilla fragrance! (I'm thinking fur and vanilla is a way excellent combo, btw.)

I was going to close this by saying that I would blow some hot air your way, but why do that when I can tell you the very warm truth? You're beautiful and I'm glad you had a good trip and are safely home.

    1. Suzanne, you are the kindest and sweetest commenter in all of cyberspace, and cyberspace is BIG :D

Iceland was absolutely stunning. It's such a different destination from anywhere else, I can't recommend it enough. The cleanest air imaginable, lovely people, good food (as long as you're not a vegetarian) and powerful nature. I was a bit worried going there alone with the kids but it turned out to be the best thing I've done in a long time :)

  4. Welcome home! The kitties are gorgeous, and the font on Ella Night bottle is lovely. :)

  5. Nice cats! :)

I read about Ella Day and Ella Night before but haven't tried them (and, from what I read, those aren't perfumes to be actively persued).

You shouldn't feel bad about the weather: it's worse one way or the other almost everywhere else!

    1. You're so right, Undina, as always :) The weather here is actually better today so maybe summer isn't out of reach here either! No, I don't think the Ellas are worth persuing, but I thought I'd mention them as the Night one wasn't a bad experience and, they're local to Iceland and Iceland needs all good publicity it can possibly get.
